So Close to Me —
A Virtual Reality installation exploring the virtual stage as an extension of an analog theatre performance

By adopting a first-person perspective, viewers are invited to empathize more deeply and to embody the role
of the “endangered being” themselves.

The project So Close to Me is a virtual reality experience that seeks to make the issue of species extinction tangible by immersing viewers in the worlds of endangered or already extinct species.

The 14-minute experience was developed as a reinterpretation of the theatrical stage space, created in collaboration between the Master Studio System + Interaction at the University of the Arts Bremen and Theater Bremen, based on their production REVUE. On the Extinction of Species.

A Shift in Perspective

By experiencing the work from a first-person perspective, viewers are encouraged to empathize, to become the “endangered being” themselves, and to reflect more consciously on their own role within this interconnected system. Visually, So Close to Me is inspired by the perceptual world of bees, interpreting animal worlds through abstract forms, vivid colors, and allegories of disappearance.

Making

The work is presented within a custom-designed box featuring a VR headset, light, and sound.

Honeybees perceive the world in ultraviolet light and are particularly drawn to flowers that strongly reflect UV light.

The logbook documenting the collaboration can be found on the cultural practitioners’ website.
